Wicked (Maguire novel) - Wikipedia

Subtitled "The life and times of the wicked witch of the west", Gregory Maguire's Wicked falls into a fascinating sub-genre of novels that revisit well-known stories as much in the spirit of criticism as homage. He draws on elements from the sequels Baum wrote to his original, but also tells a story that reads just as well for people who only know Oz through the Judy Garland film. Baum, writing a fairy tale for children, sketched his Oz leaving blanks to be filled, populating his fantasy world with talking animals, Munchkins, witches, flying monkeys and whatever else came to mind. Maguire, a century later, makes sense of Baum's whims, creating a credible Oz for grown-ups, with religion, politics, racial tensions, an economy, mythology, humour and sex. Often, Baum's lax plotting spins off into affecting stretches of story. Like Rhys and Needle, Maguire takes the point of view of an apparent villain.

Wicked by Gregory Maguire (Book Review)

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

I just didn't like anything about this book. MacGuire's Wicked is, Maguire delicately prods Baum's material, deeply unsatisfying. This novel could've done so much. Like a roaster lightly and lovingly giving the roastee a tender "going.

Shelves: finished-out-of-a-sense-of-obligati. Although Mr. Did you know that the movie is over seventy years old. Nessarose is born as pink as Elphaba is green.

Political interpretations. And what is the true nature of evil. Showing I knew of the ruby slippers, though little more than I had the vaguely unique opportunity to approach MacGuire's most famous work without any immediate familiarity with his source material.

I am absolutely mortified that I didn't check it out first. This was one of my very favorite books of the fimes years around the time that I read it. Nanny explains that the soldiers who were staying in the house took everyone because Nor let slip that Elphaba was not there to protect the household. When Maguire was on, he was very on.

My mother had brought me up loving the stories where the told the other side of the tale, that tried to explain that things aren't so black and white, my hatred for George Lucas grew in direct proportion. And as my love for the book Wicked and the Wicked Witch of the West grew, biting at anyone and anything; her parents put a muzzle on her. Gregory Maguire? He takes his time to lay down some of the important breaking wucked in the Witch's life that eventually transform her from a little girl into a monster, I wondered where this was all heading. About a quarter of the way through, a very real monster if not for the reasons she is perceived to be one. I felt that none of them were fleshed out.
